Play traversone online
Play traversone online free on GiochiPiù and discover one of the most unusual Italian trick-taking card games. Also known as rovescino or tressette a perdere, traversone turns the traditional objective of a trick-taking game upside down: instead of trying to collect valuable cards, you need to avoid them.
The aim is simple: take as few points as possible. Every trick can become a problem when it contains scoring cards, so knowing when to win a trick and when to get rid of a dangerous card is essential.
Play traversone online
Play traversone directly in your browser and enjoy the game without downloads or unnecessary steps. You can play traversone online in the traditional two-player or four-player format and focus on the game while the platform handles the cards and scoring.
Traversone is easy to start but increasingly strategic as you learn to control the suits, anticipate which cards your opponents still hold and avoid taking the points you do not want.
What is traversone?
Traversone is an Italian trick-taking card game and a reverse version of tressette. The difference is fundamental: in tressette, players normally try to win valuable tricks, while in traversone the goal is to avoid collecting points.
The game is played individually rather than in teams. Every player therefore has to manage their own hand, decide which tricks to take and try to make opponents collect the dangerous cards.
Traversone is also known by names such as rovescino and tressette a perdere. These names reflect its central idea: this is a game where taking too many points works against you.
How to play traversone
At the beginning of a four-player game, each player receives 10 cards from the 40-card deck. In the two-player version, each player also starts with 10 cards, while the remaining cards are used during the game.
The first player plays a card to start the trick. The other players must follow the same suit if they have a card of that suit.
If a player does not have the suit that was led, they can play any card. This is one of the most important moments in traversone because being unable to follow suit gives you the opportunity to get rid of a card that could otherwise force you to take points later.
The trick is won by the highest-ranking card of the suit that was led. The player who wins the trick starts the next one.
There is no trump suit in traversone. The highest card of the led suit therefore wins the trick.
The unusual card ranking
One of the features that makes traversone different from many familiar card games is its card hierarchy.
From highest to lowest, the cards rank:
3 > 2 > ace > 10 > 9 > 8 > 7 > 6 > 5 > 4
This means that a three is stronger than a two, and a two is stronger than an ace.
Card strength and card value are not the same thing. A card can be powerful when deciding who wins a trick while still being dangerous because of the points it carries.
Why points are dangerous in traversone
The scoring system is what completely changes the strategy of the game.
The ace is worth 1 point. The 3, 2, 10, 9 and 8 are each worth 1/3 of a point. The 7, 6, 5 and 4 have no card value for scoring.
The ace of clubs is the major exception. In traversone, it is worth 11 points, making it by far the most dangerous card in the deck.
The player who takes the final trick also receives 1 additional point.
This means that a player can lose control of a game with a single bad trick, especially if it contains the ace of clubs or several other scoring cards.
The cappotto
Traversone has a special result known as the cappotto.
If one player takes all the points available in the hand, for a total of 21 points, those points are not added to that player's score. Instead, the player receives no points for the hand, while every other player receives 21 penalty points.
The cappotto creates an important strategic possibility: sometimes taking a large number of points can produce a completely different result from simply accumulating them.
Traversone for two players
In the two-player version, each player starts with 10 cards. The remaining cards form the stock.
After each trick, the players draw from the remaining cards, showing the drawn card to the opponent before adding it to their hand. The game continues until all the cards have been played.
This version changes the way you manage your hand because the cards entering play are progressively revealed. You need to adapt your decisions as new cards become available.
Traversone for four players
The four-player version uses the full 40-card deck, with 10 cards dealt to each player.
Each player competes individually. There are no partnerships, so every decision is based on your own score and on the points you can make your opponents take.
Because more players are involved, controlling the distribution of dangerous cards becomes especially important. A player who cannot follow suit may be able to pass a high-value card to another player and avoid taking the trick themselves.
Strategy in traversone
The basic principle is straightforward: do not think only about winning tricks. Think about who will be forced to take the points.
A strong traversone player constantly evaluates the cards that have already been played and the suits still available in their hand.
Avoid dangerous tricks
Winning a trick is not necessarily a good thing. If the trick contains an ace, a 3, a 2 or another scoring card, taking it increases your penalty score.
Get rid of dangerous cards
When you cannot follow suit, you can play a card from another suit. This is your opportunity to pass a dangerous card to the player who is likely to win the trick.
Manage high cards carefully
High cards are useful for winning tricks, but in traversone that can be a disadvantage. A strong card can force you to collect a trick when you would rather let another player take it.
Pay attention to the ace of clubs
The ace of clubs is the most important card to track because it carries 11 points. Knowing whether it is still in an opponent's hand can completely change your decisions.
Think beyond the current trick
The best move is not always the one that avoids points immediately. Sometimes taking a harmless trick now can give you control of the next lead and allow you to avoid a much more dangerous trick later.
Why play traversone online?
Playing traversone online makes it easy to practise the unusual strategy of a game where winning tricks is not the main objective.
On GiochiPiù, you can focus on reading the game, managing your cards and learning how the scoring system changes every decision.
If you enjoy Italian card games but want something different from traditional trick-taking games, traversone offers a completely different challenge: sometimes the smartest move is to make sure you do not win.
Traversone and other Italian card games
Traversone belongs to the same broad family of Italian trick-taking games as tressette, but the objective is reversed.
Tressette rewards players for collecting valuable tricks, while traversone penalises them for doing so. This makes traversone particularly interesting for players who already know tressette and want to test the same type of card hierarchy and suit-following mechanics from a completely different strategic perspective.
You can also explore other Italian classics on GiochiPiù, including scopa and briscola, and compare their very different approaches to capturing cards and scoring points.
