Online checkers: challenge a real opponent
Checkers becomes even more challenging when you are playing against someone who is trying to predict your moves.
In online multiplayer checkers, every position creates a new tactical decision. You need to decide when to move forward, when to protect your pieces and when to make a capture that opens up a better position.
The aim is not simply to take as many pieces as possible. Good checkers strategy means looking ahead, creating forced captures and avoiding moves that give your opponent an easy route to a king.
Checkers against the computer: practise your game
Want to practise before challenging other players?
You can also play checkers against the computer, giving you a simple way to get familiar with the board, movement, jumps and king pieces.
Playing against the computer is useful when you want to practise recognising captures, thinking several moves ahead and understanding how a single move can change the position.
How does checkers work?
Checkers is a two-player strategy game played on an 8×8 board. Each player starts with 12 pieces, which are placed on the dark squares of the three rows closest to their side of the board.
Pieces move diagonally and capture by jumping over an opponent's piece. In the standard checkers ruleset, captures are mandatory when a capture is available.
When a piece reaches the opposite side of the board, it is promoted to a king, giving it greater freedom of movement.
The objective is to capture all of your opponent's pieces or leave them with no legal move.
Want to understand every rule?
Read the complete checkers rules to learn how pieces move, how jumps and multiple captures work, how kings are created and how a game of checkers is won.
Checkers is a strategy game?
Checkers may have simple rules, but the best moves are rarely obvious.
A good player needs to think ahead, recognise possible capture sequences and understand how the opponent can respond to every move.
Sacrificing a piece can sometimes create a stronger position, while moving too quickly can give your opponent the opportunity to make a forced capture or reach the king row.
The strongest checkers positions are built by combining planning, positioning and tactical awareness.
Checkers, draughts and different variants
Checkers is played around the world under different names and with different rule sets.
In the United States and Canada, the game is commonly known as checkers. In the United Kingdom and many other countries, it is generally known as draughts.
There are also several regional variants, including:
- American checkers
- English draughts
- International draughts
- Italian draughts
- Russian draughts
- Brazilian draughts
The board size, movement of ordinary pieces, capture rules and behaviour of kings can vary between versions. This is why it is important to know which ruleset you are playing before comparing strategies or rules from different versions.
Ready to put your strategy to the test?
