What is tressette?

Tressette is a traditional Italian trick-taking card game. The classic version is played by four players divided into two teams, with partners sitting opposite each other.

The game uses a 40-card Italian deck. Each player receives ten cards, so there is no draw pile during the game.

Tressette has no trump suit. Instead, the suit led by the first player determines which cards can win the trick. Players must follow that suit if they have a card of it.

From highest to lowest, the cards rank:

3 → 2 → ace → king → knight → jack → 7 → 6 → 5 → 4

The three is therefore the strongest card in a suit, while the four is the weakest.

The ranking of the cards and their scoring value are not the same thing.

For example, the three is the highest card but is worth one third of a point for scoring. The ace is lower than the three and the two in trick-taking strength, but it is worth a full point.

The objective is not simply to win as many tricks as possible. The important thing is to win tricks containing cards that are worth points.

The ace is worth 1 point.

Each three, two and figure — king, knight and jack — is worth one third of a point.

Certain combinations held in a player's hand can also give additional points when they are declared according to the rules of the game.

Because of this scoring system, a trick containing several valuable cards can be much more important than a trick containing only low-value cards.
