In pair games, every move can affect your partner as well as your own game. Paying attention to the cards your opponents draw and discard can help you understand which sequences they are trying to build and which cards you should avoid giving them.

At the same time, you need to pay attention to your partner's game and look for opportunities to extend the sequences they have already played.

A card game based on sequences, wild cards and strategy

In International Buraco, the main objective is to build sequences of at least three consecutive cards of the same suit.

You can add cards to sequences already played by you or your partner, following the rules of the game. Wild cards, including jokers and 2s, can also be used to complete a sequence when a card is missing.

A sequence becomes a buraco when it reaches at least seven cards.

Building sequences is only the beginning. You also need to decide which cards to keep, which ones to draw, which ones to discard and when to use your wild cards.

The pot can change the game

Your initial hand is not the only set of cards you will play with.

When a player runs out of cards, they take another hand of cards from the pot and continue the game. The moment when you reach the pot can therefore have a major impact on the rest of the hand.

If you finish your cards without discarding, you can use the new cards from the pot immediately. If you finish by discarding a card, you must wait until your next turn before playing the new hand.

Knowing when and how to reach the pot is an important part of Buraco strategy.

Clean, dirty, royal and semi-royal buracos

Not all buracos have the same value.

A clean buraco is a sequence of at least seven cards made without using a wild card.

A dirty buraco contains a wild card, such as a joker or a 2 used as a wild card.

International Buraco also includes royal buracos and semi-royal buracos, which are special types of complete sequences that can earn significantly more points.

Understanding the different types of buraco is essential because they affect both your score and your ability to close the game.

International Buraco and Italian Burraco

Buraco is played in different versions, and the International Buraco rules differ in several important ways from Italian Burraco.

In International Buraco, the main playable combinations are sequences of the same suit. Italian Burraco also allows groups of cards with the same value and different suits.

The types of buraco are different as well. International Buraco includes royal and semi-royal buracos, while Italian Burraco has the semi-clean buraco, which is not part of the international version.

The closing rules also differ. In International Buraco, a player or team must have made at least one clean buraco before they can close the game.

Knowing which version you are playing is important because the rules and strategy can change considerably.

Buraco and canasta: are they the same game?

Buraco and canasta belong to the same broad family of rummy-style card games and share some characteristics, but they are not the same game.

The number of decks, starting hands, combinations and closing conditions are different. Buraco uses two decks of French cards and players start with 11 cards, while the version of canasta described in our guide uses three decks and 15 cards per player.

There is also an important difference in the combinations you can create: buraco allows sequences, while canasta is based on groups of cards with the same value.
