What is briscola?
Briscola is a traditional Italian trick-taking card game played with a 40-card Italian deck. The aim is to win tricks containing valuable cards and finish the game with enough points to beat your opponent or opposing team.
The defining feature of briscola is the trump suit. At the beginning of the game, one card is turned face up and its suit becomes the briscola, or trump suit, for the entire game. A card belonging to the trump suit can beat cards from any other suit, making the choice of when to play a briscola one of the most important strategic decisions in the game.
Unlike many other trick-taking card games, briscola does not require players to follow the suit of the first card played. You can play any card from your hand, giving you much more freedom to decide whether to fight for a trick, save a valuable card or discard a card that is unlikely to help later.
How do you play briscola?
At the beginning of a game, each player receives three cards. A card from the remaining deck is then turned face up to determine the trump suit, while the rest of the deck becomes the draw pile.
The first player plays any card. The other players then play one card each, and they are free to choose any suit.
The trick is won by the highest briscola card played. If nobody plays a briscola, the highest card of the suit led by the first player wins the trick.
The player who wins the trick collects the cards and starts the next trick. Players then draw new cards from the deck, beginning with the player who won the previous trick.
The game continues until all the cards have been played.
Briscola card values
Not every card in briscola is worth points. The most valuable cards are the ace and three, followed by the king, knight and jack.
The point values are:
- Ace – 11 points
- Three – 10 points
- King – 4 points
- Knight – 3 points
- Jack – 2 points
- Seven, six, five, four and two – 0 points
There are 120 points in the complete deck. To win a hand, a player or team must collect at least 61 points.
This means that winning tricks is not enough by itself. The real objective is to win the tricks that contain the most valuable cards.
Briscola for two players
In the two-player version, you play directly against your opponent.
Each player receives three cards and takes turns playing one card at a time. Because there is no partner to rely on, remembering the cards that have already been played becomes especially important.
You need to decide when to use your aces, threes and trump cards and when it is better to give up a trick and save your strongest cards for later.
Briscola for four players
Briscola can also be played with four players in two teams.
Partners sit opposite each other and share the points collected during the game. The cards won by both members of a team are counted together at the end.
Team briscola adds another layer of strategy because every trick affects both players on the same team. Players must pay attention to the cards already played, understand the state of the game and choose their cards carefully without communicating through words or signals.
Why play briscola online?
Briscola has remained popular for generations because its basic rules are simple while its strategic possibilities are surprisingly deep.
A single low-value card can win an important trick if it belongs to the trump suit. An ace can be worth 11 points but can also be lost if it is played at the wrong time. The three is worth 10 points and ranks immediately below the ace, making it another crucial card to track throughout the game.
Playing briscola online lets you enjoy this classic Italian card game without needing a physical deck or a table full of players.
Every game gives you the opportunity to improve your memory, timing and understanding of the cards still in play.
